Giving thought to my voting decisions this year and mindful of how New Jersey trends for federal offices, I concluded that my vote for Township Council candidates will have the most direct impact on the future of my household. Either campaign can claim that a vote for them means moving forward on infrastructure issues or helping our local businesses. What is important to me that hasn’t been directly discussed — and I suspect is important to most residents — is the future of our municipal taxes in today’s world. What will we get for our tax dollars and how will we keep them from increasing?
A key to keeping our municipal tax at least in check is to ensure that all the town’s planned development projects keep moving and complete on time. We will not get the budgeted revenue from these developments — that will help pay for our new Municipal Complex — unless these projects remain on schedule and conform to contract specifications. I concluded that Jeanne Kingsley and Jeff Varnerin can best deal with current and future projects as well as anything else the council must face.
Aside from Jeanne’s financial background and the best practices she has instituted, her sustained service on the council gained her the necessary experience with government and the critically important intimate knowledge of all development projects. Given the past turnover on the council, there is no longer anyone who has that level of knowledge about projects and standards, and she actively puts it to use in ensuring projects remain on track. Jeanne has an incredible commitment to see projects to fruition.
So how does Jeff Varnerin complement Jeanne? Many have likely read about his project management experience and the scale of budget he has been responsible for. What you might have missed was his associated certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP). This national certification from the Project Management Institute represents the “top guns” of the profession. I have worked with many PMPs and these folks are zealous in managing cost, schedule and performance while delivering customer value.
Jeff is the new person we need on the council with the many critical ongoing and upcoming projects they will have to deal with. His leadership and problem-solving skills, further complemented with a scientific background and experience as a first responder, reflect the competencies the council needs in these uncertain times to manage complexity. If that isn’t enough, Jeff has the tools to support sound decision-making and, from what I gathered from questioning him when he canvassed my neighborhood, he is already up to speed on critical town issues.
If you are looking for commitment, competence and caring to reach a better future for Berkeley Heights, Jeanne and Jeff are your best bet.
