It’s a medical service that focuses on preserving a patient’s quality of life. “We treat the patient and their family as a whole, as they are on their journey facing a life-limiting illness,” explained Dr. Jonathon Von Koenig, Lee Health Medical Director Palliative Care.
Palliative care helps patients with symptoms like pain, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. “While we hope that our patients recover, a lot of our patients don’t recover and we are that extra layer of support for them along their journey,” he said.
Palliative care is available for patients who are diagnosed with cancer, COPD, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s Disease, to name a few. “Ideally, patients get involved with us at the time of diagnosis, at the earliest stage of a life-limiting diagnosis such as cancer, or COPD, or end-stage cardiac condition so that really we can make the biggest difference,” Dr. Von Koenig said.
Using resources like nurse care coordinators, physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, and spiritual support staff, palliative care can help patients and their families manage everything that can accompany a life-long illness. “If we can help mitigate and decrease that burden so patients can have the quality of life and seek the treatment that makes sense for them and they desire, I view that as a success,” he said.
Giving patients support and helping them cope with the physical, spiritual, and emotional pain associated with an illness.
