According to a new AARP public opinion survey, 84% of registered voters over age 50 favor providing a tax credit up to $5,000 for family caregivers who work, based on how much is spent on assistance.
A bipartisan bill has been introduced in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives that would provide this kind of financial assistance - the Credit for Caring Act. Support is astoundingly bipartisan, according to the AARP survey (78% of Republicans, 93% of Democrats, and 83% of independents).
The Credit for Caring Act could offset the over $7,000, on average, that families spend annually on out-of-pocket care-giving expenses. AARP research shows that family caregivers are providing $470 billion in unpaid care each year for tasks such as preparing meals, paying bills, helping with medications and other activities. The Act also has support from Alzheimer’s Association, National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, Walgreens, Elizabeth Dole Foundation, and 36 military and veterans’ groups.
Its passage would enable families to be compensated for expenses and avoid financial ruin while providing care, compassion, and dignity to loved ones. It’s sensible. Contact your members of Congress to support the Credit for Caring Act. Please do it now.
