IPSWICH — Some kids will have a new JanSport backpack and sneakers with names like Sketchers to wear when they go back to school, thanks to the all-volunteer organization Ipswich Caring.

“It levels the playing field when you walk into school. You definitely feel it. It makes a difference,” said Cheryl Foster-Cahill, a retired middle-school principal and executive director of Ipswich Caring, addressing the organization’s use of name brands.

Foster-Cahill said it was a sad thing to see name brands playing such a key role in our society, but she said Ipswich Caring works with reality and wants its children to fit in.

Ipswich students go back to school on Wednesday, September 1.

The JanSport backpack will be filled with items the children will need for back-to-school requirements.

Students and families who live in Ipswich and who meet income restrictions can fill out an application form for the Ipswich Caring program.

On August 18, from 4 to 6 p.m., downstairs in Town Hall, students in the Ipswich Caring program will be fitted for new sneakers courtesy of Whirlaway Sports Center in Methuen.

Roughly 75 kids will receive sneakers, although about 200 students are in the Ipswich Caring program overall, Folster-Cahill said.

Ipswich Caring is probably best known for its holiday donation drive, but it also gives to families in need at children’s birthdays and for back-to-school needs. Generally, Ipswich Caring uses volunteer buyers who operate from lists provided by participating families to buy gifts. This past year, in an effort to slow the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus, participating families picked up gift certificates at Town Hall and bought their own gifts at Walmart and Target.

All donations go directly to buy clothing, gifts, food, and other necessities for participating families. Ipswich Caring is an all-volunteer organization and relies on donations.

“It’s the community support that keeps us alive,” said Foster-Cahill.
