Introduction
Health-care professionals spend a great deal of their lives caring for others in office, community, and hospital settings. However, with people living longer, the physician role of caregiver is often expanded to include the care of one’s parent(s) or elder family members in a home setting. The objectives of this article are to understand the perspectives and personal considerations for health-care providers who become caregivers to their parents and to review useful strategies when one assumes this role. Personal aspects such as work schedules and family interactions, as well as practical aspects such as preparing the house and personal emergency response devices, among many other topics, are reviewed. This article is not meant to be a complete guide but will offer guidance on how to anticipate and prepare before these life-changing events occur. We aim to have this article be relevant to physicians of any age, as many younger physicians are assuming responsibility for the care of their parents even during their medical school or residency training. Although it is written with the narrative of 2 clinicians assuming care for their aging parents, the principles discussed can apply to anyone in any profession caring for a relative with a new chronic illness or life-altering condition.
The Evolving Challenge
According to data from the 2014 US Census Bureau, there will be continued enormous growth and diversity of the population older than 50 years in the next few decades. (1) Changes in life expectancy, the aging of the population, advancing medical treatment modalities, cultural and financial considerations, as well as the constraints in health-care reimbursement have all led to an increase in the demand for caregivers.
