OTSEGO, Mich. — A day care in Otsego is being shut down by the state out of concerns for the children’s safety.
The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs announced Tuesday it is suspending the license of Nancy Xenos, who was running a day care out of a home at 486 Earl St. in Otsego.
The state started investigating the day care after a mother noticed marks and bruises on her child’s face and neck on Feb. 5. According to LARA, Xenos became upset with the child when they would not stay on a cot and was jumping from one to another.
The child was taken into another room, where the woman is accused of grabbing the child by the neck and pushing their face into a cot. Investigators say Xenos put her foot on the child’s back and held them down on the cot.
When the child’s mother arrived, investigators say the child was still shaking and told the mother they had been held down. LARA says the mother asked Xenos about her child’s injuries and was told she didn’t know how they happened, but the child had been jumping between cots.
On Feb. 6, the mother took her kid to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital to be examined for the injuries from the day before. A LARA consultant went to the day care and talked to Xenos the next day.
LARA says she told the consultant that she moved the injured child to another room to settle down and didn’t notice any marks or injuries and denied knowing how they happened.
Xenos’ license was suspended, effective Feb. 11.
Xenos is not allowed to provide child care and is required to tell parents of children who were in her care that her license has been suspended.
