A delivery driver drove into a Bucks County day-care center Thursday afternoon, injuring multiple napping children, one of whom is in critical condition, according to county officials.
Four children were taken to a hospital after the car crashed into the Children of America day-care center on the 300 block of Knowles Avenue in Upper Southampton Township about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Township Manager Joe Golden said.
The children — one critical and the other three suffering from minor injuries — were taken to Abington Hospital, and the driver, a woman whose name police did not release, was taken to St. Mary Medical Center, he said.
“We’re shaken,” Golden said.
A black BMW drove into the front of the center, which is located in a strip mall. It traveled “significantly into the building, about 30-to-40 feet,” First Assistant District Attorney Gregg Shore said Thursday evening.
The vehicle crashed into a room where 17 children — all either 3 or 4 years old — were napping, Shore said. Nearly 80 children were inside at the time of the crash, and all but the injured were reunited with their families after the incident.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. The woman behind the wheel of the BMW was a delivery driver between the ages of 50 to 60, Shore said. She has no children of her own at the day-care, he said, and was there Thursday afternoon in a “business capacity.”
The driver was cooperative with investigators, he added, but declined to give further detail, citing the ongoing investigation.
A person who answered the phone at the day-care hung up without commenting on the crash.
