BRANFORD — You might think the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter already had all the cats it could possibly handle.

Then a day like a recent one rolls around — with 22 new cats, all in difficult medical condition, essentially dropping out of the sky into the shelter’s lap — and you see that it can handle whatever it has to.

But that doesn’t make it easy — and that doesn’t mean it doesn’t need help or additional resources.

And another 10 to 15 cats from the same alleged hoarding situation in a Branford house likely are still on the way, shelter Director Laura Burban said. The shelter assisted the state Department of Agriculture in handling the situation, she said.

“Today was a very long and sad day. We assisted the state on (an alleged) hoarding case and removed 20 cats and kittens from an extremely filthy feces and urine hoarding house,” the shelter said in a Facebook post written by Burban .

“The cats have lived there for at least a year without any humans,” the post said. “There are probably 15 more we haven’t caught but we will continue to assist until we can get them all.

“These cats are all in need of immediate medical care,” the post said. “Some have open wounds where their eye sockets are. Some have upper respiratory infections. Some seem dehydrated and others are just in shock.

“...We have promised these kitties a better life and lots of love, tenderness and cleanliness in their future,” it said.

All of the 22 cats initially rounded up were brought to the shelter’s veterinarian, Burban said.

“Right now, four have had inoculation,” meaning they “had to have their eyes removed because of the infections,” Burban said. “Others have upper respiratory infections. They’re underweight, dehydrated. Their fur looks bad. Everything just looks off.”

Burban said she couldn’t disclose the location of the house because it’s part of an ongoing investigation. But she said there was nobody living in the house and “the cats were basically using the entire house as their litter box.”

Some of the cats that initially were brought to the veterinarian were brought back to the shelter Thursday, Burban said.

“Some are still at the vets receiving treatment,” she said.

The shelter, which also is in the process of raising the last quarter of $1 million that it needs to build a new, expanded and renovated shelter, “desperately needs to raise money to care for all of” the cats, the shelter said in the Facebook post.

People who want to help can either donate online at https://bit.ly/344z7TS or mail a check to Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, 749 East Main St., Branford, 06405. People who want to support the shelter renovation project also can give by going online to www.cosgrovesavinglives.org, Burban said.

In addition to financial support, “we desperately need clay cat litter and cat food,” as well as bleach and Lysol, Burban said. Those items can be dropped off at the shelter at 749 E. Main St.

The shelter normally houses 50-75 cats, but there have been “cases in the past where we’ve ended up with 40 new cats all in one day,” Burban said. “We do the best we can.”
