Do not disparage workers caring for your loved ones
During this unprecedented crisis a myriad of health and societal concerns have come to light, our elderly residing in nursing facilities, at the forefront.
Health care professionals that have dedicated themselves to long term care have always recognized the value of seniors despite being treated as the pariah of health care. Unlike a hospital setting where patients generally discharge home, we in long term carry our people through life’s final journey. We lead them through the culmination of their lives, share in their every emotion and spend our days reminding them they are loved and valued. We come to work early, stay late, run errands on their behalf never giving a thought to lengthening our workday. Staff works diligently to make every day their best day. Our residents are family in the truest sense.
While hospital personnel are lauded for their courage, as they should be, long term care staff go unnoticed until demonized in the media. Nursing homes are a convenient scapegoat, a place to unload grief and callous implications of indifference are an attempt at finding meaning where none can be found.
We have loved and lost many. It’s an inevitability and heartbreak we accept and shoulder even when a pandemic is not breaking down our doors.
There is no greater honor than to love and be loved by a family divinely bestowed. Please, before vilifying the long-term care community, be reminded that we are holding on tightly to your loved one as if they were our own.
