TAYLOR COUNTY—When a death occurs, it can affect the whole family, but it can really have an impact on youths. One local organization is doing its part to help the younger family members through their loss.
West Virginia Caring will once again be holding their Annual Camp Caring. In its 24th year, the camp is set to take place on Saturday, August 29, at Camp Mountaineer, located at 187 Camp Mountaineer Road off Route 119 North in Morgantown.
Organizers are accepting applications to this one-of-a-kind, free camp.
Camp Caring has been serving children with their grief and loss camp since 1996, when it began as Camp Nabve. It provides West Virginia Caring the perfect opportunity to support children in the state who have suffered a loss.
“The camp provides the child an opportunity to spend a day with other children who have also experienced the death of a loved one,” shared Vice President of Public Affairs, Cindy Woodyard. “This grief and loss camp has proven to be a valuable life experience for children.”
Camp Caring focuses on the unique grief process of children. Trained counselors utilize fun activities, art therapy and large or small group activities to empower each of the campers present.
Through these fun experiences, children are able to express their grief and successfully cope with the feeling of their loss.
“During the one-day camp, children discover that they can live life in a changed world with a new relationship to their loved one who has passed,” Woodyard said.
A few years ago, to help the family heal together, West Virginia Caring added the adult caregivers of the child to the camp.
“As adults, we are often at a loss at both how to help the child we love who is hurting and how to take time to heal ourselves,” Woodyard commented.
To help aid the adults, WV Caring will host grief workshops for the surviving adults in the child’s life.
“These sessions will run at the same time as the children’s camp,” Woodyard revealed.
The workshops will help the adults focus on their own grieving process in a way that each family member is individually strengthened and supported, so that the entire family can move forward together on their journey of grief to a new normal.
Applications are still being accepted to Camp Caring. Applications and camp brochures may be found at wvcaring.org/services/grief-and-loss/camp-caring.
