The organizations on our Health Care Nonprofits list are in a tough spot.
They have to survive the coronavirus pandemic while fighting the problems it has caused — be they medical or societal.
Many of them have expanded the services they offer while working to protect their employees, clients and finances, judging by a survey Crain's conducted while gathering data for the list, which is ranked by 2019 expenses and excludes hospitals.

Take MedWish International, No. 27 on the list. It normally collects surplus medical supplies and distributes them to remote locations around the world. But the pandemic drove MedWish to ramp up its Local & Domestic Giving Program, which has delivered masks, gloves, ventilators and other items in short supply to a long list of local health care providers. It has ramped up collection of those products as well.
At the same time, MedWish has been forced to cancel several fundraisers.
A few organizations that serve the elderly — a demographic at higher risk of dying from COVID-19 — are delivering more meals and helping them with shopping and other tasks.
For instance, the Benjamin Rose Institute of Aging, No. 23 on the list, said its meal delivery program "has nearly doubled in size. We have also added delivery of groceries and personal care items to our consumers as needed."
Most nonprofits that answered our coronavirus questions mentioned that they've added telehealth services. The Nord Center, which provides behavioral and mental health services, even started a virtual support group for essential workers in Lorain County. It's at No. 21 on the list.
Still, many nonprofits face challenges simply delivering normal services. For instance, FrontLine Service is offering both remote and in-person behavioral and mental health services. But it's still hard to reach some of its clients, many of whom are homeless.
"We know that over 200 of our clients do not have phone access," FrontLine said in its survey response. "We continue to look for creative solutions to provide access to those individuals who will become isolated ... if they become disconnected from their support systems."
