What we all need now is a chance to have some fun and a way to let others know how we feel during this time of social distancing.

The answer isn’t to be found in getting a group of friends, family or neighbors together because that could negate the positive strides we have made against COVID-19 in Kentucky.

We believe the answer lies in creating an outdoor display or decorating your front porch or yard in a way that shares your caring and compassion for others.

We’re calling it the Rotary Club of Carrollton Carroll County Cares Contest. You can have some good, safe fun at home coming up with your creative idea and putting it out at home to let others enjoy it. Once everyone has their decorations and displays completed, we can hop in the car and drive around to see their handy-work.

Plus in the end, someone will win a $100 prize to be decided by our readers.

It’s time to get creative!

Find a way to say thank you to those on the front lines at hospitals, nursing home and working in EMS who are helping those who are suffering from the coronavirus. Or show your appreciation for folks who work in stores keeping the shelves stocked and having to deal with the public at check-out lines.

We all must remember those who have lost their lives to COVID-19. I’m going to incorporate this into my personal display at home through the use of green as Gov. Andy Beshear has mentioned because it is the color of compassion. And anyone who knows me would expect me to use green because it’s my favorite color. We’ll see how it all comes together this week.

No, I’m not eligible to win the $100 prize. But you are! The winner of the contest also gets to show off their display or decorations featured on the front page of The News-Democrat.

All you have to do is register on the MyCarrollNews.com site. Click on Submit News and then Carroll County Cares Contest. Complete the information and upload a photo of your creation.

I’ve seen the creativity that folks in Carrollton and Carroll County possess and know folks will come up with all kinds of great ideas for their decorations and displays. Despite the sadness that comes with the sickness and death associated with COVID-19, we have so much to be thankful for and this is a chance to show it.

All entries must be finished and registered online by Monday, May 11 so we can publish all the photos of the displays and decorations in the May 14 newspaper. From there, we will ask our readers to vote for the winner. The deadline to vote is Friday, May 22. We will then feature the winner in the May 28 edition of The News Democrat.

We must thank our lead sponsor, the Rotary Club of Carrollton, and our other sponsors — Carrollton Main Street Program, Carroll County Public Library, First National Bank of Kentucky, Insurance Associates and Carrollton Federal Bank — for their support of Carroll County.

Have fun and get creative! I can’t wait to see your creations. It will be fun to go out and drive around to see the love, compassion, caring and concern that makes our community strong through these difficult days.

See page 5 for entry information. If you have any questions, call us at 502-732-4261 or email me at jmoore@mycarrollnews.com.
