Last week a total of 15 child care centers and 35 home-based programs benefited from donated supplies in an effort to support early childhood development during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A release from the Douglas Education Service District said the newly formed Douglas County Childcare Coalition, organized the giveaway. That initiative is co-led by the Business Campions for Kids program at ESD and Childcare Connections and Education at Umpqua Community College. Douglas County Commissioners allocated funds for the supplies and coordinated the purchase of all items. Items distributed included:
*800 rolls of paper towels
*Almost 25,000 paper plates and bowls
*80 gallons of bleach
*50 bottles of disinfectant spray
*Too many pencils, pens, crayons, markers and glue sticks to count
*100 packages of sanitizing wipes
Julie Hurley, the Biz4Kids program coordinator at ESD said it was “…amazing to see the community come together as a coalition to strategize on solutions to increase the availability of quality child care and support our community’s child care providers”. Hurley said all the providers who came to the distribution event were grateful for the support they were receiving and truly appreciated all the supplies they received.
The release said the coalition includes a total of more than 30 local businesses, nonprofits, public and education sectors.
