On Tuesday, May 5, the Wagner College community came together in a powerful way to support its students most in need from the COVID-19 pandemic. The effort, called the Day of Caring, was part of a global #GivingTuesdayNow campaign for charities and nonprofits.
Eight years ago, Giving Tuesday was created as a “global generosity movement.” The idea was that, after all of the various holiday shopping days following Thanksgiving — Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday — there would be one day dedicated not to buying, but to giving.
It has proved to be a tremendous success, and Wagner College has been a regular participant in the new tradition for several years.
In March, when the coronavirus pandemic started wreaking havoc on the world economy, the organizers of Giving Tuesday decided to take the philanthropic power of their original creation and launch a second event, Giving Tuesday Now, “an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19,” according to the Giving Tuesday blog.
Wagner College immediately saw the value of the new effort.
“The impact of the global health crisis has left members from our student community struggling during these difficult and uncertain times,” said the website for our Day of Caring project. “We have already had a number of alumni and friends come forward with offers of financial support for those in need. Because of this, Wagner has expanded the Make a Difference Fund,” an existing drive to raise money for students in financial need. “Gifts to this fund will provide emergency tuition assistance and temporary financial support. This essential and welcome relief to our students and their families will help them navigate through these uncertain times.”
The Day of Caring campaign was launched early Tuesday morning, May 5.
By the end of the day, 225 alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students and friends of Wagner College had raised a total of $256,920, including a generous dollar-for-dollar match by members of the school’s board of trustees.
Wagner College President Joel W. Martin and his wife Jan were deeply moved by the outpouring of support from the college community for our students most in need.
“To all those who made a gift and to all those who called in with their good wishes, emailed their encouragement or posted on social media, thank you,” President Martin said. “Jan and I are humbled to share this vibrant community with you.
“The power of the Wagner community continues to awe and inspire as we rise to face this global crisis,” Martin said. “Your support powers the ambitious efforts of our students who will, no doubt, go on to greatness. Thank you for making such things possible!”
