Kim Reed’s office isn’t typical, but it’s standard for a home care nurse. She has her van filled with medical supplies including face shields, pads, gloves, and several other items.
At 6:30 a.m., the mother of two uses her laptop to figure out which patients she’s going to see first and plan out her day.
“Every day is different,” she said. “You are ready to change and be flexible, because you never know what could happen.”
Home care isn’t for everyone, but it is for Reed, whose nursing career began shortly after she took care of her grandmother when she had back surgery.
“I really enjoyed being in the community, having the privilege of going into their home to make their place even safer,” Reed said.
Going into those homes and getting to know the patients and families is one reason Kim loves her job.
She said seeing results and helping patients feel more comfortable is rewarding, but not always easy, especially during the pandemic.
“The anxiety in the community is definitely heightened. The anxiety with my patients is definitely heightened,” Reed said.
So far, Reed has worked with two COVID-19 positive patients.
"The first time was very anxiety-inducing for me, and I’m not really sure why because we definitely have had what we need to take care of these patients safely,” Reed said. “That patient needs enough care if not more than other patients and we can’t back away from that.”
When it all started, she chose to isolate herself from her family, which includes her 2-year-old grandson.
“I think that was probably the basis of my anxiety,” Reed said, “was knowing that it was the right thing to do, but not wanting to be away from my family."
Despite the anxiety, Reed, like so many other health care workers, chooses to help others who need it most right now.
“We’re all out there together,” she said. “Each one of us has something different to do. I have some friends that are right on the front lines of the ICUs, and I have so much admiration for them.
“I think we need to stick together and support each other, and we’ll get through it.”
